Those who live by the sword, die by the sword.
The media made Trump. There has been much gnashing of teeth among liberal commentators on this score.
You’ve heard the charges. The media let themselves be used by Trump. He jerks them around with his midnight tweets. The media and Trump are codependent—they give Trump free publicity, he gives them high ratings. He sucks all the media oxygen out of the room, and his opponents lose the battle of public opinion. Trump wins.
The above seems a pretty spot-on description of the 2016 primaries and the election.
But soon, campaigning must give way to governance; decisions and actions will loom over tweets and rallies.
Sooner or later, in any presidency, something bad happens. And then another misfortune occurs. And then a stumble or blunder gets exposed.
Might stories of Trump crashing and burning earn just as high ratings as stories of Trump soaring and triumphing? We don’t know. So watch the cable news. Watch for the Joe McCarthy moment: Have you left no sense of decency? Watch for the turn.
Once the media turns on Trump, do they ever turn back? Can the man fall faster than he rose?
You betcha.
Those who live by the sword, die by the sword.
Sweet.
